Kizilsu Kyrgyz Autonomous Prefecture features two strikingly contrasting landscapes: Atushi Heavenly Gate, a massive natural stone arch rising from the Gobi Desert, and Karakul Lake on the Pamir Plateau, sitting at an elevation of about 3600 meters. They are not on the same route; squeezing both into one day would be extremely rushed.
Atushi Heavenly Gate: Requires hiking up a scree slope.#
Tianmen is approximately 60 km from Atushi city center; the final stretch is an unpaved road. It takes about 40 minutes to walk from the parking area to beneath the stone arch, with a gravel slope and elevation gain—allow roughly two hours for the round trip. The arch stands about 450 meters tall, offering a striking sense of scale when viewed from below.
- Wear shoes with good traction to avoid slipping on gravel paths.
- Afternoon backlight: morning shots are clearer.
- No resupply on the mountain. Bring your own water and hat.

Karakul Lake: Your First Stop on the Plateau#
Head north from Kashgar along the China-Pakistan Highway toward Tashkurgan. After about 190 km, you'll reach the lakeside—a drive of 3.5 hours. On clear days, the lake reflects the full silhouette of Muztagh Ata. Due to the high altitude, limit your stay.
- Obtain a border pass before departing to Tashkurgan.
- It's windy by the lake; a windbreaker is more practical than a down jacket.
- Take it slow when first arriving at high altitude; a slower pace is more comfortable.

How should the two locations be allocated?#
Tianmen is best suited as a flexible half-day add-on from Kashgar, with the drive to Artux taking about 1.5 hours. Karakul Lake, on the other hand, belongs to the Pamir route and is typically combined with Tashkurgan and Muztagh Ata over two to three days. Attempting both in one day would mean compressing more than 300 kilometers of driving plus two hikes into just 12 hours, which would significantly compromise the experience.
Time and Stamina Allocation for Tianmen#
About 40 minutes and a 200-meter ascent from the parking lot to beneath the stone arch. The gravel path requires focused attention. Round trip takes two hours; with travel time from downtown, it fits perfectly into half a day. Bring plenty of water—there are no refreshment stops on the mountain.
Pace on the plateau section#
Karakul Lake sits at 3,600 meters. Upon arrival, avoid rapid movement or running; limit your stay to under two hours. If you experience persistent headache or nausea, descend immediately to a lower altitude—do not push through the symptoms.
ID and Weather#
A border pass is required for the route to Tashkurgan; obtain it at your household registration location or designated office before departure. Weather on the Pamirs changes rapidly: strong UV radiation on sunny days, and colder winds on cloudy days. A windbreaker is more wind-resistant than a down jacket.
What other locations are there in Kizilsu?#
Traveling up the China-Pakistan border road from Kizilsu, you'll find not only Karakul Lake but also Baisha Lake, Muztagh Tower Viewpoint, and Taheman Wetland. All these sites lie on the same route; by following them in order of elevation and driving time, you can visit all three in a single day.
Tianmen belongs to a separate branch heading toward Atushi, following a different route from the Pamirs. Allocating these two distinct landscapes across two days is the most reliable itinerary for this route.
Accommodation and dining in Kizilsu#
Atushi city is compact, with most restaurants serving Halal cuisine. Daily meals include mixed noodles, skewered meat, and pilaf. Accommodation options are primarily hotels with standard facilities. Traveling toward the border crossing, lodging becomes scarce; most visitors return the same day.
You may encounter Kyrgyz yurts and mare's milk in pastoral areas. Remove your shoes before entering a yurt, and use your right hand to accept milk tea.
Kizilsu is not a traditional tourist destination, which makes its daily life scenes more authentic. When traveling to Xinjiang, the pace naturally slows down here.
