Mid-September in Northern Xinjiang requires a light down jacket for early morning outings. We followed the 8-day Northern Xinjiang loop, departing from Urumqi via Burqin and Kanas, then Hemu, before returning to Urumqi—a total distance of approximately 1800 kilometers. The longest driving day was about 6 hours; we stayed two nights in Burqin and one night in Hemu.
Is 8 days enough for the Northern Xinjiang Loop?#
The biggest worry before you head out is whether you have enough time. If you spread out a map, you'll see that the one-way trip from Urumqi to Burqin is about 620 kilometers, taking 7 to 8 hours by car. You'll likely need to stop for a break in Karamay or Wuerhe along the way. So while 8 days may sound like plenty, you actually have just over 3 days left for Kanas and Hemu. With only 5 days, most of your time will be spent traveling, leaving very little room to stop and enjoy the scenery.
We ultimately joined a private small tour with Xinjiang International Travel, accommodating 2 to 6 people. Tours start with just one person, so there's no need to join a group with strangers. Head to northern Xinjiang in September for autumn's layered colors. From mid-to-late September, the birch forests in Kanas and Hemu turn from green to gold, while the lakes grow calm. Day-night temperature swings can exceed 15°C: days hover around 20°C, but mornings and evenings dip near freezing. Dress in layers to adjust.
II. Overview of the 8-day itinerary: daily schedule#
Day 1: Depart from Urumqi. Gather at 7:30 AM and head west. Lunch in Wuerhe with hand-pulled noodles; arrive in Burqin by evening. Day 2: Focus on the Five-Color Beach. After 7 PM, the sunlight warms the rock layers—just hold your hat tight against the strong wind. Day 3: Enter Kanas via shuttle bus. During peak season, expect to queue for about 40 minutes to get into the mountain.
On the fourth day, we transferred to Hemu and chose toHemu VillageStay one night. Before dawn, people head to the viewpoint; the wooden cabins' morning smoke blends with the mist. When the wind dies down, the valley is so quiet you can hear the water. Spend the remaining days retracing your steps. On day five, rest in Burqin. Return to Urumqi on day six, and wrap up on days seven and eight around the city.

This route's daily travel time fluctuates between 3 and 7 hours, alternating in length, yet remains manageable physically.
- Days 1 to 2: Urumqi to Burqin, drive approximately 7 hours, overnight in Burqin.
- Days 3 to 4: Kanas and Hemu, overnight in Hemu Village
- Days 5 to 6: Return to Urumqi from Burqin after rest and adjustment
- Days 7 to 8: Activities around Urumqi, preparing for return journey
At Kanas Scenic Area, reaching the Fish Viewing Platform requires climbing 1000 steps; those with average fitness should assess their limits. The boardwalk along the lake is gentle and suitable for a leisurely stroll. At Heimu Viewpoint, early mornings are busy; arrive before 6 to secure a front-row spot.
3. Accommodation and Meals: What to Expect#
Accommodations in Hemu Village are primarily wooden cabins with compact rooms. Hot water is heated on-site by the inn, and temperatures drop after 9 PM, so avoid showering too late. In Kanas, we stayed near Jiadengyu, close to the entrance for easy access the next day. Accommodations in Burqin offer more comfort with reliable hot water, ideal for a mid-journey break. Overall, lodging options vary by season; final pricing is subject to the confirmed rate at booking.
You can find banmian (mixed noodles), kao baozi (baked buns), and pilaf along the way. The grilled fish at Burqin Riverbank Night Market is very popular; clarify whether you're charged per fish or by weight before ordering. Local...Xinjiang CuisineA wide variety of items available. In summer, melons and fruits are affordable; grapes and cantaloupes are common and help keep you hydrated on the go.
We'll stay two nights in Burqin County, where supermarkets and pharmacies are easily accessible for convenient restocking. Dining options within the scenic areas are more limited and slightly pricier, so packing some snacks beforehand is recommended for a smoother trip.
4. Common Misjudgments on the Road#

First mistake: assuming attractions are close. They may look adjacent on the map, but actual one-way distances often reach 100–200 km. Second: tickets and shuttle buses. In Kanas and Hemu, admission and shuttle fees are separate; expect long queues for shuttles during peak season—arrive early. Also, evenings at Wucangtan can be very windy; tripods may tip over easily.
Allow some flexibility for departure times.
We set out at 6 one day, but had to rush as morning fog rolled in and ended up missing it. Later we realized leaving a 1-hour buffer for the first stop of the day gives much more peace of mind. In northern Xinjiang, the daily temperature swing can exceed 15°C: wear short sleeves during the day, add layers in the early morning and evening, and don't forget sunscreen and lip balm.
One more thing: roads in Northern Xinjiang are generally in good condition, but gas stations are far apart. If driving yourself, refuel before running low on fuel. If joining a tour group, you won't need to worry about this.
Lessons from this trip#
If I were to go again, I'd stay an extra half-day in Hemu and slow down. 8 days isn't plenty, but it's enough to see the backbone of Northern Xinjiang. The itinerary is set, but the light, wind, and group size change daily. All I can do is leave some room each day and avoid over-scheduling.
