The Dadao Road is an ancient route between Hami and Shanshan, centered on the Yardang landforms and Black Gobi. It has no paved roads and isn't a conventional tourist attraction. Before you start shooting photos, make sure your vehicle, route, and official registration are all arranged.
What is the Daidao Road?#
It is part of the ancient Silk Road, characterized by wind-eroded yardangs and gravel deserts. Days are scorching, nights are cold, and mobile signal is virtually nonexistent. This is not a ticketed attraction with boardwalks for a quick tour. Entrance signs indicate restrictions; access depends on on-site conditions and approval from management authorities. If you want to see yardangs without the risk, Wuerhe and Wucaitan offer safer viewing directly from the roadside.
Vehicle and Companion#
Essential features for off-roading include four-wheel drive, high ground clearance, a spare tire, and a tow strap. Before departure, check your tire pressure and tow hooks—note that many vehicles' spare tires are merely decorative. Sedans and city SUVs are not recommended for this terrain. Travel with at least two vehicles; never go alone so you have assistance if you get stuck. Fill up your tank in Hami or Lintan before entering, and refuel when the tank drops below half. For sandy sections, you can lower tire pressure slightly, but remember to reinflate afterward.

Route & Entrance#
Common routes enter from the Congdun or Sharhu direction. Expect numerous junctions and almost no signage; rely on GPS tracks and a guide, and carry a paper map in case your devices run out of battery. Hike during daylight and exit before sunset. Avoid shortcuts between yardangs—loose sand and hidden gullies can easily trap vehicles. Drone use is restricted in some areas; check regulations before flying, pack it up when you see warning signs, and agree on a meeting point with your group.
Reporting and Guides#
Register with local authorities or the operator before entering. Provide details on group size, vehicles, entry/exit times, and contact information. Hire a guide familiar with the terrain—safety outweighs cost savings. If temporary restrictions or weather changes occur, reschedule instead of forcing entry. Do not hike alone away from your vehicle; the Gobi has few landmarks, and you can easily lose direction within hundreds of meters.
Supplies & Communications#
Prepare 4 liters of water per person per day, plus an extra day's supply. Pack high-calorie food, common medications, and warm layers together. Bring at least one satellite phone or Beidou short-message device; regular mobile phones have no signal in remote areas. Vehicle radios or walkie-talkies are more practical than phones for mutual alerts between vehicles. Carry all trash with you—plastic and glass in the Gobi Desert take decades to decompose.

Seasons and Time#
March to May and September to November are ideal. Summer brings high ground temperatures and strong winds with sand; winter nights get extremely cold. Pack a sleeping bag rated for 0°C in October. Plan for two days and one night for a comfortable pace—returning in a single day only lets you skim the edges without going deep. On your way back, you can visit Mingsha City or return to Hami city center, then explore the East Tianshan Mountains on the second day. There's no need to rush everything into one day.
FAQ#
Is a ticket required for Dadao?
It is not a gated scenic area with a unified entry fee. However, access may require prior notification and guide fees; please consult local authorities and operators for specific details.
Can regular sedans enter?
Not recommended. The road surface consists of loose sand and gravel, and the low ground clearance risks scraping the undercarriage. Recovery costs after getting stuck are far higher than renting an off-road vehicle.

Itinerary connection reminder#
When booking accommodation in northern Xinjiang, prioritize staying near the Hami Daidao crossing points (vehicle access, routes, and reporting requirements) to enter the scenic area earlier the next day. If your trip is only two or three days long, focus on one or two directions for a more complete experience.
