Photography Guide: Morning Mist in Hemu Village
Morning mist in Hemu Village is one of Xinjiang's most iconic photography scenes. Between 6 and 8 AM, the mist rises from the Hemu River, enveloping the entire village. Golden birch forests appear and disappear through the haze, while smoke curls from Tuvan wooden homes, creating a scene like paradise.
Capture Time:Mid-9 to early 10 is the best time for capturing morning mist in Hemu. The ideal shooting window is between 6 and 8 AM; arrive at least 1 hours in advance to secure your spot.
Location:The Hemu Village Viewpoint is an ideal spot for capturing morning mist. Located on a small hill outside the village, it offers a panoramic view of all of Hemu Village.
Photography Gear:Wide-angle lens ( 16-35mm ) for panoramic shots of morning mist, telephoto lens ( 70-200mm ) to compress space, tripod (essential for long exposures), polarizing filter (reduces water glare), and spare batteries (drain quickly in cold temperatures).
Shooting Tips:Use a long exposure (1-5 seconds) to capture the flowing morning mist. Set aperture to f/8-f/11 for depth of field and ISO 100-400 for image quality. Bring a flashlight or headlamp and head to the viewpoint before dawn.
Important Notes:Hemu Village is at an altitude of approximately 1200 meters. Be mindful of altitude sickness. In autumn, there is a significant temperature difference between day and night; dress warmly while shooting. Strong winds at the viewpoint require weighted tripods for stability.

The best viewing spots are on the hillside observation decks just outside the village, a short 20-to-30-minute walk away. Set out before 6 AM; fog is most common between 6 and 8 AM, with soft lighting around sunrise.
Camera Settings and Safety Warnings
For morning mist, use f/8 to f/11, ISO 100 to 400, and shutter speeds of 1 to 5 seconds to capture flowing mist. Use a wide-angle lens for panoramas or a telephoto lens to compress the scene. A tripod is essential for long exposures; carry an extra battery for cold-weather drain. Dawn roads are dark and slippery—travel with a partner and bring a headlamp.
