Kanas Overview#

Kanas LakeLocated in northern Burqin County, Altay Prefecture, Xinjiang, China, Kanas Lake is the country's deepest glacial moraine dammed lake, with a maximum depth of 188.5 meters. The lake has a crescent shape, stretches approximately 25 kilometers in length, and covers an area of 45.73 square kilometers. Renowned for its seasonal and weather-dependent color changes, the lake displays deep blue-green hues in autumn that contrast strikingly with the golden forests lining its shores.

Kanas is not only a natural scenic area but also the traditional homeland of the Tuva people.Hemu Village、Baihaba VillageKanas Village is one of the three major Tuvan villages, preserving a unique language, culture, and way of life.

Best time to visit#

Fall (Month 9, Day 15 – Month 10, Day 5)

Autumn is the peak season for Kanas' stunning scenery and attracts the most visitors. The viewing period runs from 9 to 30, when birch forests and larches turn golden while the lake waters shine in shades of blue and green, creating the most vibrant colors.

Summer (Months 7-8)

Kanas in summer offers lush greenery and cool weather, making it an ideal escape from the heat. The lake's deep green waters attract fewer tourists.

Winter (Months 12-2)

In winter, Kanas is blanketed in snow with a frozen lake, offering opportunities for ice and snow sports. With the fewest visitors, it's ideal for travelers seeking tranquility.

Key Attractions#

Fish Observation Deck

The Fish Observation Platform sits atop a mountain west of Lake Kanas at an elevation of 2030 meters, offering one of the best vantage points for panoramic views of the lake. Climb 1068 steps to reach the summit and take in the entire expanse of Lake Kanas. We recommend visiting in the morning for softer lighting.

Sanwan

Shenxian BayAt dawn, a thin mist rises over the river, creating a fairy-tale atmosphere. This is Kanas' most famous spot for viewing morning fog.

Moon BayThe river curves into a graceful crescent. In autumn, the birch forests on both banks turn golden, resembling a shimmering ribbon encircling the sapphire waters when viewed from above.

Wolong BayA small island in the center of the river resembles a sleeping dragon. In autumn, it is covered by a golden forest.

Kanas Village

The Tuva village by Lake Kanas offers a cozy autumn scene with wooden cabins emitting smoke and golden forests. Experience traditional Tuva life, enjoy milk tea, and savor hand-grabbed meat.

Hemu Village

Hemu VillageLocated about 60 km from Kanas, Hemu is the largest of the three Tuva villages. Its autumn birch forests are denser than those in Kanas, and the morning mist mixed with cooking smoke creates Hemu's most iconic scene. We recommend staying 1–2 nights.

Baihaba Village

Baihaba VillageLocated on the border between China and Kazakhstan, Baiba is known as the "Northwest Border Village." More primitive and tranquil than Kanas and Hemu, it requires a border pass for entry.
