Kanas: Why It's the Iconic Autumn Destination in Xinjiang
Among Xinjiang's many autumn destinations,KanasIt stands out as a representative destination for Xinjiang's autumn because it combines diverse landscapes: deep alpine lakes, dense primeval forests, serene Tuva villages, majestic border vistas, and unique geological wonders.
From mid-9 to early 10, when birch and larch trees turn golden, Kanas reaches one of its most breathtaking seasons. Lakes, forests, snow-capped mountains, and villages come together in perfect harmony.
Natural Wonders of Kanas
The Mystery of Color Change
The most magical feature of Lake Kanas is its color-changing water, which shifts with the seasons and weather. It appears light green in spring, deep green in summer, blue-green in autumn, and white after freezing in winter. The blue-green hue in autumn is the lake's signature color, creating a striking contrast against the golden forests lining both shores.
Scientists have found that changes in lake color are linked to the types and abundance of plankton, light angles, and reflections from the surrounding environment. However, local Tuva people prefer to believe these changes are caused by the "lake monster" (actually large taimen).
primary forest
Kanas is surrounded by vast stretches of pristine forest, dominated by Siberian larch, birch, and European poplar. In autumn, these trees change color in layers from the foothills to the mountain peaks, creating a spectacular vertical gradient of hues.
Within the Kanas Scenic Area, there are multiple forest hiking trails. The most recommended route is from Kanas Village to the Fish Viewing Platform, spanning approximately 5 km. Along the way, you can experience the charm of the autumn forest up close.
Glacial Remnants
Kanas Lake is a massive glacial moraine-dammed lake formed during the Quaternary glaciation. Distinct U-shaped valleys and glacial moraines surrounding the lake serve as a natural laboratory for studying glacial geology.
Tuva Cultural Experience
Kanas Village
Kanas Village, located by Kanas Lake, is the traditional homeland of the Tuvan people. As a branch of the Mongolian ethnic group, the Tuvans possess a unique language, culture, and way of life. In autumn, the village presents a warm scene with wooden houses emitting smoke amidst golden forests.
Experience traditional Tuva life in the village: stay in wooden cabins, drink milk tea, listen to Suur (a traditional Tuva instrument) performances, and taste hand-pulled meat and horse sausage.
Hemu Village
Hemu VillageHemu is the largest of the three Tuva villages and offers stunning autumn scenery. Its birch forests are denser than those in Kanas. In the early morning, mist rises from the Hemu River, enveloping the scattered wooden houses like a fairytale world.
Autumn arrives in Hemu slightly earlier than in Kanas, with foliage changing color by mid-9. We recommend staying 1–2 nights in Hemu Village to fully experience the Tuva culture.
Baihaba Village
Baihaba VillageLocated on the border between China and Kazakhstan, this is the smallest of the three Tuva villages and offers the most authentic border atmosphere. From the village's observation deck, you can view the scenic landscapes of Kazakhstan across the border line.
