Introduction: Why a Dedicated Guide for Taxkorgan?#
Tashkurgan Tajik Autonomous County (nicknamed "Tash County") is the most unique county in Kashgar Prefecture. Nestled deep within the Pamir Plateau, it sits at an average elevation of over 3000 meters and shares borders with Tajikistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. The area features majestic snow-capped mountains and glaciers, mysterious alpine lakes, ancient stone city ruins, and distinct Tajik culture. The 300-kilometer journey from Kashgar to Tash County is hailed as one of China's most scenic border highways. However, the high-altitude environment presents unique challenges—altitude sickness, extreme temperature fluctuations, and transportation restrictions—that require advance preparation. This guide provides all the essential information for an immersive trip to Tash County.
1. How to Reach Tashkurgan#
Prerequisite: Border Pass
A border pass is required to travel to Tashkurgan; without it, you will be denied passage at checkpoints. Ensure you obtain this before departure. See the Documents section in the Kashgar Travel Guide for details.
Transportation
- Private Charter (Recommended):SUV daily rental: 600–900. Maximum flexibility with instant photo stops. Drivers know local roads and attractions well, often doubling as informal guides.
- Carpooling:$0-$1 per person. Find a ride-share partner at the hostel or online. Budget-friendly but less flexible.
- Shuttle:The Kashgar bus station operates daily. Fares are approximately 60 CNY, and the journey takes 6-7 hours. No scenic stops are included; this service is for transportation only.
Route Overview
Kashgar → Ghez Checkpoint → Baita Lake (160 km) → Karakul Lake (200 km) → Taxkorgan County (300 km). The entire route is paved with good road conditions, though it features many curves and gradually increasing elevation. One-way driving time: 5-6 hours (including photo stops).
II. Must-Visit Stops Along the Route#
Bai Sha Lake ( 160 km from Kashgar)
Azure lake waters reflect against pristine white sand dunes, creating a striking contrast that feels like paradise. Boardwalks and viewing platforms along the shore allow for close-up views. Recommended stay: 40-60 minutes. Admission: 40 yuan. Best photo time: morning with direct sunlight.
Karakul Lake (200 km from Kashgar)
An alpine lake at 3600 meters altitude offers a clear reflection of the snow-capped Muztagh Ata Peak (7546 meters) on calm, sunny days. Known as "The Mirror of the Father of Ice Mountains." Recommended stay: 1 hours. Admission: 50 CNY. Strong winds and low temperatures near the shore—dress warmly.
Muztagh Ata Viewpoint
Located near Karakul Lake, this is the best spot for a close-up view of the "Father of Icebergs." No additional ticket required. At sunset, the snow-capped peaks turn golden—a prime time for photography.
3. Core Attractions of Tashkurgan#
Stone City
The ancient city of the King of Puli during the Han Dynasty, dating back approximately 2000 years. Ruins stand atop a high platform, surrounded by open river valleys and grasslands. The best time for photography is at sunrise; we recommend visiting in the early morning. Admission: 30 yuan. Visit duration: 1-2 hours.
Jincao Tan Wetland
A natural wetland at the foot of Stone City, lush with grass and water, where yaks graze peacefully. In autumn, golden grass creates a classic composition with the stone structures. Ideal foreground for capturing reflections of Stone City and sunrise. Free admission.
Panlong Ancient Road
Approximately 30 km from Taxkorgan County, this road spans 36 km with 608 curves. Drive up the winding mountain pass for an exhilarating experience. The summit viewpoint offers a stunning panoramic view of the entire road's curves. Free to use. Allow 2–3 hours.
Bandir Blue Lake
Approximately 40 km from Taxkorgan County, a hidden gem deep in the Pamir Mountains. The lake displays a dreamy Tiffany blue hue against barren brown mountains. Largely undeveloped and preserved in its original state. Accessible only by private vehicle; road conditions are moderate.
Tajik Folk Village
In Tajik villages near Tashkurgan, you can visit local homes. Hosts will welcome you with milk tea and naan bread, showcase their embroidery skills, and perform the energetic Eagle Dance. It's the best way to experience Tajik culture.
IV. Accommodation and Dining#
Accommodation
Tashkurgan County offers numerous hotels and homestays, with standard rooms priced at 150-300 CNY per night. While simpler than those in Kashgar city, they are fully equipped with essential amenities. Accommodation is scarce during peak seasons (February to March, National Day), so book well in advance. We recommend choosing a room with heating or an electric blanket, as nighttime temperatures can drop below 5°C.
Dining
Dietary options in Taxkorgan County are limited, featuring Sichuan and Xinjiang cuisine. Average meal cost: 30-50 CNY per person. Recommended local specialties include Tajik Radish Soup (Qiamagu), Yak Jerky, and Milk Curd. We recommend packing some snacks and drinking water for emergencies.
V. Precautions for High Altitude#
- Altitude Sickness:Tashkurgan is at an altitude of approximately 3100 meters. Most people experience no significant effects, but individual responses vary. Upon arrival, avoid strenuous activity, stay well hydrated, and limit alcohol consumption. If you experience symptoms such as headache or nausea, rest immediately or descend to a lower elevation.
- Temperature Difference:Day-night temperature difference can reach 15-20°C. Bring a windbreaker or lightweight down jacket even in summer. Protect yourself from strong sun during the day and stay warm at night as temperatures drop sharply.
- UV:The high-altitude UV radiation is intense. SPF50+ sunscreen, sunglasses, and a sun hat are all essential.
- Supplies:Tashkurgan relies on external transport, so prices are slightly higher than in Kashgar. We recommend stocking up on snacks, fruits, and bottled water before you leave Kashgar.
- Communication:Signal is reliable in county towns but unstable at remote attractions. Download offline maps in advance.
- Keep going!Tashkurgan has gas stations, but fuel may occasionally run low. It is recommended to fill up in Kashgar before departing.
