The Kizil Caves are located in the village of Kizil, Baicheng County, Aksu Prefecture, about 70 kilometers from Kucha city center, with a driving time of over an hour. As one of the largest and best-preserved sites within the Kucha Grottoes complex, its murals feature distinct themes that differ significantly from those found in central Chinese grottoes.
This visitation experience differs from typical scenic spots: caves open in batches with guided tours led by docents. Self-guided movement within the cave area is not permitted. Understanding these rules in advance will help you avoid arriving on-site only to find limited access.
I. Cave Access and Reservation#
The caves are visited in groups. Each group has access to a set of caves, with specific cave numbers rotating according to the current schedule. Some caves may be temporarily closed for conservation maintenance. After purchasing tickets, join your assigned tour group and enter with a guide. A single group visit lasts approximately one hour.
During peak season (May–October), please confirm your session by phone or online a day in advance; groups should book ahead. In the off-season, sessions are less frequent—walk-ins may be accommodated, but we still recommend checking first.
- Entry method: Grouped teams, enter by session.
- Duration: ~1 hours, including explanations
- Booking: Confirm sessions 1 days in advance during peak season; book team visits early.
- Prohibited: Photography, video recording, touching murals, and use of flash inside the cave.

2. What to Look for in Murals#
The Kizil murals primarily depict Jataka and Pratītyasamutpāda stories. The compositions are arranged in diamond-shaped panels, with figures and color palettes reflecting influences from both Gandhara art and local traditions. Listening to an audio guide is far more efficient than viewing the murals alone; key narratives are highlighted and explained throughout the tour.
Light inside is dim; allow your eyes to adjust. Before entering, switch your phone to silent and wear your backpack on your front to avoid brushing against the walls when turning around.
3. How to plan a trip starting from Kuqa#
The round trip from Kuqa to the Kizil Caves takes over an hour one way. With about an hour for the visit and travel time back, half a day is sufficient. Visit the caves in the morning, return to Kuqa by lunchtime, and spend the afternoon exploring Kuqa Royal Palace, Kuqa Grand Mosque, or the Subashi Temple ruins to experience the full story of Qiuci culture.
If you're interested in grottoes and Buddhist art, consider staying two nights in Kuqa: one day for Kizil, the other for Kumtura and Subashi for a more relaxed pace. You can also combine a visit to the Tianshan Mystery Grand Canyon on the same day.

IV. How to prepare before your visit#
Spend 30 minutes learning a few key terms—Ben Sheng stories, karmic cause-and-effect tales, diamond-grid composition, and Kizil music and dance. These concepts will be repeated throughout the tour guide's explanation; having them in mind beforehand will help you follow along more easily.
The history of lost murals is explained in the exhibition area. When viewing this content, maintain a calm mindset and treat it as part of understanding the value of the grottoes, rather than an emotional complaint.
Complete your visit at the Qizhi Museum in Kuqa. Visiting both sites together will give you a much fuller understanding of Qizhi culture. Note that most museums are closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly.
The route from Kuqa to Baicheng features a striking transition between the Gobi Desert and lush oases. Through the car windows, you can spot traces of karez wells and vineyards. Lunch in Baicheng county town offers affordable dining options compared to areas near tourist attractions. Connecting the grottoes with key cultural sites in Kuqa creates a more cohesive itinerary. After the tour, if you'd like to explore further, head south to the Subashi Buddhist Temple Ruins in Kuqa. Here, you can view the remaining pagodas on both sides of the river valley. The two sites have distinct atmospheres; visiting them within a single day will help you better understand the religious and trade significance of the Qiuci region.
The cliffside caves are carved into sandstone. Afternoon sun is intense on the western side; please rest in shaded areas while waiting for your tour slot. Bring a light jacket, as the interior of the caves is cooler than outside and the temperature difference may cause you to catch a cold.
Ticket and guide fees are subject to the rates posted at the scenic area. Summers in Aksu, where Kuqa is located, can be extremely hot, with daytime temperatures frequently reaching 40°C (104°F). Plan outdoor activities for the morning whenever possible.
