Guide

Lop Nur Village is located in Yuli County, where the Tarim River flows alongside the settlement. Poplar trees, sand dunes, and water lie along the same scenic axis. Lop Nur Village is located in Yuli County, Bayingolin Mongol Autonomous Prefecture, about 85 km (1.5 hours) from Korla city center. Here, the Tarim River takes a bend, bringing together river water, poplar trees, sand dunes, and reeds in one area—a rare "water town meets desert" landscape in southern Xinjiang.

Its appeal lies not in isolated spots, but in the close proximity of diverse landforms. Within half a day, you can experience river, forest, and desert landscapes—this is why this route is frequently featured.

1. What to See in the Village#

This village replica recreates the fishing and hunting lifestyle of the Luo people, featuring wooden houses, fishing gear, poplar wood boats, and an exhibition area. The tour moves at a relaxed pace, taking about 40 minutes to complete, making it ideal for learning about life in the Tarim River basin.

The real highlights are the dunes and poplar trees beyond the village. Shuttle buses connect all points of interest within the scenic area, though walking is also an option. Since walking on sand can be tiring, we recommend taking the shuttle to key spots before exploring on foot.

  • Departing from Korla: approximately 85 km, 1.5 hours
  • Recommended duration: Half day, including dunes and riverside.
  • Poplar viewing: Best period begins mid-month in 10
  • Walking on sand is exhausting; choose closed-toe shoes.

II. How to arrange dunes and river sections#

The dune area is best visited in the late afternoon. As the sun angles lower, the ridges become more defined, and the heat is less intense. During summer midday, the sand surface gets extremely hot; walking barefoot can burn your feet, so wearing socks or shoes is safer.

Boat rides are available along the river. The journey is short, offering views of poplar trees and reeds on both banks. Boats may be suspended during windy conditions; please check daily operating status before departure. Additional activities such as off-road driving and sand sliding are charged separately at the scenic area's rates—select only what you need.

3. How to connect with the surrounding areas of Korla?#

Day 1: Depart from Korla, visit the Luobu Village in the morning, return to the city in the afternoon to tour the Bayingolin Prefecture Museum, and enjoy an evening stroll along the Kongque River. Day 2: Head north to Bosten Lake or west to the Tarim Populus Euphratica Forest in Lunan.

Poplar season (month 10) is the hottest time of year on this route; book accommodations and vehicles in advance. Poplars along the Tarim River are scattered, and viewing quality depends on that year's water levels. Check local water conditions before you depart for the most reliable plan.

4. The Relationship Between the Tarim River and Populus euphratica#

Populus euphratica tolerates both drought and salinity, but young trees require water, so they are most densely distributed along rivers. The lower reaches of the Tarim River once experienced flow cessation, leading to widespread degradation of poplar forests. This has since been gradually restored through ecological water conveyance. With this context in mind, you can assess the health of trees along the river: areas closer to the water, with grass under the canopy and intact tree crowns, are typically healthier.

Water levels in October are typically lower than in summer, exposing riverbanks and allowing closer access to the water. During high summer flows, some sections may flood, shifting optimal viewing spots. For the most reliable results, check current water conditions before heading out rather than relying solely on last year's photos for camera positions.

The wooden boats and fishing tools on display reflect the village's past, when fishing was the primary livelihood. Take your time to read the placards for dates and purposes before snapping photos; this will help you better understand their significance.

Korla, as a transit hub, offers plenty of accommodation and dining options. The riverside promenade along the Kongque River is perfect for evening strolls. Scheduling the Lop Nur Village in the afternoon of Day 1 and Bosten Lake for Day 2 creates a smooth two-day itinerary. The dunes at Lop Nur Village are best viewed in the late afternoon, while Bosten Lake is ideal for early morning visits.

Dining along the route focuses on barbecue and mixed noodles. Options near the villages are limited, so it's more comfortable to eat back in town when you return. For lake activities, see below.Bosten Lake OverviewSee the full South Xinjiang route overview.Southern Xinjiang Route。
