1. How far is the lake loop and how long does it take?#
The scenic loop around Sayram Lake is approximately 90 km. Driving non-stop takes about 2 hours, but we stopped frequently to take photos for much longer. At an elevation of roughly 2071 meters above sea level, the lake is cooler than the city and often windy—be sure to put on a jacket when you step out of the car.
Weather in the Lake District can change quickly, with sun and clouds often appearing side by side. We checked the forecast before leaving, and only a few raindrops fell when we reached the west shore; it cleared up shortly after. Bring a compact umbrella or a waterproof jacket for peace of mind.
The lake has multiple exits: the eastern side leads toward Guozigou, and the south connects to the Huohe Expressway. Which gate you enter determines whether you circle the lake clockwise or counter-clockwise. Most visitors enter from the east exit, complete a full loop, and then exit through another gate.
Our actual schedule that day was: entered the lake area at 9, stopped for lunch in the Xihai Grassland at 12, reached Gaotai by 4 in the afternoon, headed back at 7:30, and exited the scenic area around 8. In total, driving plus photo stops took over 7 hours. If we had driven straight through without stopping, it would have taken just 2 hours—the difference is entirely in whether we stopped or not.
II. Which gate to enter, clockwise or counter-clockwise?#
We chose to enter from the east entrance and proceed counter-clockwise. The reasoning is simple: in the morning, the eastern side has more mountain shadows; walking counter-clockwise aligns with the sunlight, keeping the lake view bright. In the afternoon, when you return clockwise on that side, the backlighting will be more pronounced. Before entering the lake area, take a look first.Sayram LakeBasic introduction.
Tickets are required before entering the lake area; staff will guide you at the entrance. We booked in advance and scanned our codes to enter, avoiding the queue. First-time visitors should follow the signs and avoid taking shortcuts into the grasslands—many areas are restricted.
III. How is time allocated among the stops?#
There are over a dozen scenic stops along the lake loop, but visiting and photographing all of them isn't practical. We selected 5 key spots: the elevated platform near the entrance, Xihai Grassland, Dianjiangtai, the shallow area to the south, and one windy spot. Photograph the clear water near the shore between 9 AM and 11 PM, have lunch with packed food at a stop around midday, then wait for side lighting on the grassland section after 3 PM.
The art of取舍 in photography
You can't capture everything in a single day around the lake. We focus on shooting two or three key spots and just stop briefly at the others. In the morning, we shoot the shallow flats and grassland sections; in the afternoon, we head back to Gaotai for sunset. When it's crowded, walk 100+ meters beyond the drop-off points on either side—often you'll find uncrowded angles there.
- The elevated platform offers panoramic lake views, but the strong wind may blow your hat away.
- Xihai Grassland is ideal for photos with the lake and people. Be careful not to step into the fenced grazing areas.
- Color stratification in shallow water is more visible on clear mornings.
- It can feel chilly in the windy section. Bring a windbreaker or heavy jacket.
4. Beyond the lake: Add an extra day to your journey#
If time allows, consider adding an extra day after the lake tour to head toward Yili and explore the grasslands and river valleys near Nalati. The drive takes approximately 3 to 4 hours on good roads. We changed our plans last minute and left at 8 AM the next morning, arriving by noon.
Extended route
From Sayram Lake heading toward Yili, you can connect Guozigou Bridge, Nalati, and Kalajun. With only one day, we chose Nalati. At this time of year, the grasslands are lush green, visitors are more spread out, and it's quieter than expected.
5. Tickets, Shuttle Buses, and Cost Ranges#
Lake area entry requires a ticket. You can either drive around the lake or take the shuttle bus; fees differ. Including accommodation and meals, the estimated daily budget per person is 300 to 600 CNY (subject to the confirmed quote for your booking period). During peak season, parking is limited—arrive before 10 AM to secure a spot.
Shuttle buses stop at every station, offering more flexibility but requiring wait times. Self-driving around the lake is flexible, provided there are no daily driving restrictions and parking is available. During peak season, parking becomes scarce after noon. When we arrived in the morning, parking was spacious; by the time we left, a queue had formed at the entrance.
Add a few more sentences at the end#
Circling the lake sounds simple, but weather plays a huge role. When the wind picks up, the water loses its reflection; when clouds thicken, the colors deepen. If I go again, I'll stay by the lake overnight and catch the boat at 6 a.m. Xinjiang International Travel offers private small groups for 2 to 6 people.
