Parking at Xinjiang's major scenic areas isn't about finding a spot—it's figuring out where your car can actually go. At Kanas, Hemu, Sayram Lake, and Tianchi, you must park at the transfer hub first, then take shuttle buses or lake loops. Arriving an hour early makes a huge difference in your experience.
Kanas and Hemu: Transfer First#
Private vehicles for Kanas are generally parked at Jiadengyu, where visitors transfer to shuttle buses to enter the scenic area. The Jiadengyu parking lot has multiple sections: arrive before 8 AM during peak season to secure spots near the transfer center; otherwise, park on the outskirts and walk or wait for a shuttle. For Hemu, park at the outer transfer point and take the shuttle bus into the village. Some roads may be restricted in winter; self-driving access is subject to on-site announcements. Do not park on roadside meadows, as you will be asked to move. A shuttle runs between Jiadengyu and the transfer center; it's about a 10-minute walk. If arriving at night, book accommodation near the transfer center. During peak season, traffic police manage flow—follow on-site directions.
Sayram Lake: Around the Lake and Entrance#
Ering Lake allows a full loop drive. Parking is available at both the East and South Gates. The East Gate side fills up first for sunrise viewing, so arrive 30 minutes before dawn. Designated pull-offs exist along the scenic route; avoid stopping on curves or road shoulders. Strong winds are common near the lake—hold doors firmly when opening. During peak season, tour groups congregate in the afternoon; mornings (before 10 AM) and evenings are quieter. The loop is long, so refuel or charge early. Some sections are one-way; missing an exit requires a full detour. There is no shade by the lake—never leave heat-sensitive items in your car during summer. The South Gate has limited parking, while the East Gate offers ample space.

Tianchi: Visitor Center Shuttle#
Park at the Visitor Center and take the shuttle bus up the mountain. Parking lots (both garage and surface) fill up early during peak season; arrive before 9 AM to secure a spot. Afternoon returns are crowded, so expect lines exiting the lot—plan extra time. Note the last shuttle departure and don't hike too far on mountain trails. During rain or snow, roads may be slippery and schedules adjusted. The garage entrance is on the side of the Visitor Center; follow signage. Return traffic peaks about an hour after park closing; leaving 30 minutes earlier makes a big difference. It's cooler on the mountain, so bring a jacket after parking.
Decide whether to arrive early#
Check three things: your booked time slot, the first shuttle bus departure, and sunrise time. If you've booked the earliest morning slot, arrive at the parking lot 40 minutes before the first shuttle. For sunrise, count backward from sunrise time, including transfer and walking duration. When traveling with seniors or children, it's better to arrive early and wait in the car than to rush right on schedule. During peak seasons (weekends and holidays), add an extra 30 minutes. Confirm whether entry is allowed after your booked time slot expires. First, check where the first shuttle departs, then choose your parking spot. On days for sunrise viewing, park your car the night before.
Several ways to find a spot#
Use the official parking lot first; ignore people on the roadside offering to guide you. Upon entry, check the zone signs and note your zone number and the nearest exit. Take a photo of your parking spot after parking—the lots are large, and it's common to lose track of your car. Park with your front facing out for easier departure. Do not occupy two spots or block aisles. Charging spots are reserved for vehicles needing charging. Buses and cars have separate areas; do not follow buses in. Note the floor and column number instead of just the zone for better accuracy. Never park in fire lanes or on grassy areas. Remember the exit number.

Night and Winter#
Arrive at the scenic area after dark: first confirm whether the parking lot is open, as some close at night. In winter, roads may be icy; drive slowly on slopes and use snow chains if necessary. Do not leave valuables in the vehicle; store luggage in the trunk and cover it. Batteries can lose charge in low temperatures; let the engine warm up before driving after long periods of parking. Parking lots may be temporarily closed after snowfall; check announcements before you depart. Frost may form on windows in winter—allow time for defrosting. Before leaving, check your headlights and tires, and carry a snow shovel.
