General characteristics of Xinjiang's climate

Xinjiang has a typical temperate continental arid climate, characterized by large day-night temperature differences, long sunshine hours, scarce precipitation, and dry air. Annual sunshine totals 2,500 to 3,500 hours, making it one of the sunniest regions in China. Average annual rainfall is only around 150 mm, with some areas in southern Xinjiang receiving less than 50 mm. This climate creates Xinjiang's unique natural scenery and necessitates special travel preparations. Understanding Xinjiang's weather patterns is essential for planning a perfect trip.
Spring Weather (March to May)
Temperatures in Xinjiang rise quickly but remain unstable during spring. In March, daytime temperatures in Turpan can reach 15–20°C, while nights may drop below freezing. By April, Ili sees daytime highs of 10–20°C, with lingering snow in mountainous areas. May brings more stable weather, with daytime temperatures between 15–25°C—ideal for outdoor activities. Spring also features strong winds, especially in the Baili and Sannuli wind zones, where gusts can reach force 8 or higher. This season is also prone to sandstorms; southern basins occasionally experience floating dust or blowing sand. Check forecasts regularly and adjust your itinerary accordingly. Wind- and sand-proof gear is essential.
Summer Weather (June to August)
Summer is Xinjiang's warmest season, though temperatures vary widely across regions. In July, Turpan averages 33°C, with extremes reaching 45°C or higher, making it one of China's hottest cities. Urumqi averages a comfortable 24°C in July. The Ili River Valley and grasslands enjoy daytime highs of 25–30°C and nighttime lows of 10–15°C, offering a natural escape from the heat. Mountain areas like Kanas and Bayinbuluke range from 20–25°C during the day, dropping to 5–10°C at night. Afternoon thunderstorms are common but brief; carry an umbrella just in case. UV radiation is intense, so sun protection is essential every day.
Fall Weather (September to November)
Autumn is the most comfortable season in Xinjiang, featuring crisp air and clear skies. In September, northern Xinjiang sees daytime temperatures of 15–25°C (59–77°F) and nighttime lows of 0–10°C (32–50°F), with mornings in Kanas dropping to -5°C (23°F). By October, southern Xinjiang experiences daytime highs of 10–20°C (50–68°F), while the Pamir Plateau at around 3,000 meters (9,843 feet) remains cooler. November marks the start of winter in the north with sub-zero temperatures, whereas the south stays mild. Autumn brings reduced rainfall and exceptional air clarity, creating ideal conditions for photography. However, the day-night temperature range reaches its annual peak, meaning you could experience all four seasons in a single day—layered clothing is essential.
Winter Weather (December to February)
Winter in Xinjiang is long and extremely cold. Northern Xinjiang sees average January temperatures between -15°C and -25°C, with extreme lows in Altay and Kanas dropping below -40°C. Southern Xinjiang is milder, with daytime temperatures in Kashgar and Hotan ranging from 0°C to 5°C in January. Snowfall is concentrated in the northern mountainous regions and Altay, where snow depths can reach about one meter. Southern Xinjiang receives less snow but occasionally experiences cold snaps. Days are short with early sunsets. In extreme cold, battery life for electronic devices depletes quickly; keep phones and cameras close to your body to maintain warmth. Apply anti-freeze cream to exposed skin and avoid prolonged exposure.
