1. When is the peak flower season in Ili?#
Flowers in Ili do not bloom simultaneously. Apricot blossoms come first, typically around 4; wildflowers and grasslands bloom from 5 to 6.LavenderPeak viewing typically occurs from mid-6 to early 7. Start by discussing timing, then plan the route—reversing this order often leads to disappointment.
We're heading here for the lavender. We've scheduled the trip for mid-6, with 7 days enough to depart from Yining, circle around, and return. If you're focusing on just one type of flower, check its blooming period in advance and add a few buffer days to your itinerary.
Note: Flowering times can vary by 1–2 weeks each year. Check local conditions before departure for a more reliable plan than relying solely on fixed dates.
How to plan a 7-day itinerary#
Our route starts and ends in Yining: we'll visit Sayram Lake first, then head toward Zhaosu and Tekes. On the way back, we'll pass through Nalati before returning to Yining. Daily driving time ranges from 3 to 5 hours, with the longest day reaching nearly 6 hours. We always arrive at our accommodation before dinner.
- Day 1: Arrive in Yining. Acclimate and restock supplies in the city.
- Day 2: Arrive at Sayram Lake and tour half the lake.
- Days 3 to 5: Explore Zhaosu and Tekes, enjoy the flower fields and grasslands.
- Day 6: Arrive in Nalati. Full-day itinerary arranged.
- Day 7: Return to Yining.
3. Lavender and Flower Fields: Which Spots to Visit#
Lavender fields are mainly concentrated in the Huocheng area. Access to individual plots requires a fee, which varies by plot and current conditions, typically ranging from a few dozen yuan per person. Final pricing is subject to confirmation on the day of visit. Morning visits offer better lighting with angled sunlight, resulting in cleaner, more vivid purple tones in photos.

In the grassland flower fields of Zhaosu and Tekes, wildflowers bloom untamed. We spent more time here because lingering in one spot lets you watch cloud shadows drift across the plains.
IV. How to Plan a Visit to Sayram Lake and Guozigou#
Saima Lake is best explored over half a day. The full loop is nearly 90 km and takes about 3 to 4 hours by car with stops. It's windy by the lake, and temperatures in 6 can still be chilly, so bring a jacket. The Guozigou Bridge lies on the way to the lake and is a popular spot for photos.

If time is tight, you can just walk along the lake edge without completing the full loop. We'll do the loop in the morning and head through Guozigou into the Ili River Valley in the afternoon for a smoother pace.
The winding roads in Guozigou can make passengers prone to motion sickness. It's much more convenient to apply a motion sickness patch beforehand than to search for one at a pharmacy after arriving. We spent over 4 hours on the road that day, with one brief stop for rest.
5. How to Prepare for Weather Changes#
Weather in Ili changes quickly; sunny mornings and rainy afternoons are common. Rain on the grasslands arrives suddenly and passes just as fast. Pack a waterproof jacket instead of an umbrella—it's more practical, especially since strong winds can make umbrellas difficult to use.
- Bring a waterproof jacket and mud-proof shoes.
- Keep rain covers ready for your camera and phone.
- Alternate between indoor activities and photo spots. Head out as soon as the rain stops.
VI. Balancing Accommodation and Dining#
Yining city offers a wide selection of hotels, with rates typically ranging from 200 to 300 CNY per night. Homestays near scenic areas have basic amenities and can double in price during peak seasons; final pricing is subject to confirmation at the time of booking. We recommend a hybrid approach: stay two nights in the city and one to two nights each in the grasslands and by the lake, balancing comfort with flexibility.
- Stay in the city for more hotel options and easy access to supplies.
- Stay in a homestay by the grassland and lake to be closer to photo spots.
- High season demand is surging—secure your nightly stay early.
Don't overplan your meals; local noodle shops and pilaf spots are perfect for daily dining. Order by the number of people to avoid leftovers—portions in Xinjiang are typically generous.
7. Who It's For (and Who It's Not)#
This route is perfect for those who love flowers and grasslands, and don't mind waking up early to catch the light. If you only plan to visit one or two iconic spots, 7 days in Ili may feel too slow; it's better suited for a leisurely journey with frequent stops. Conversely, if you enjoy photographing wildflowers and are flexible with your schedule based on the weather, you'll feel right at home here.
Suggested number of people
2 to 4 travelers: Self-driving or private charter offers greater flexibility. During peak season, roads and parking are congested; smaller groups are easier to coordinate. Larger groups require more effort to schedule at a unified time. Xinjiang National Travel also offers similar small-group tours during the peak season. For inquiries, call 18999127242.
Let's clarify a few things.#
Avoid locking dates rigidly for spring flower tours. Bloom times depend on temperature; visiting too early means no flowers, too late means they've faded. Building in buffer time is safer than pinning to a specific day. If we could do it again, we'd separate lavender and grassland visits with a flexible day each, rather than cramming two spots into one day.
