Combining Yili and Kashgar in a single trip often underestimates the journey between them. The two cities are over 1400 kilometers apart with no direct train service. By road, it takes two days due to detours; the only practical options are a direct flight or a layover in Urumqi. Choosing the wrong route can add half a day to a full day to your itinerary.
Direct flight: 2 hours, but infrequent.#
Direct flights from Yining to Kashgar do not operate daily; they typically run a few times per week, with a flight duration of approximately 2 hours. Seats are limited during peak seasons, so book as soon as your itinerary is confirmed rather than waiting until the last minute.
- 10-day itineraries to connect Ili and Southern Xinjiang
- Limited flight frequency and tight options for cancellations or changes. We recommend keeping a buffer day.
- The two locations have a time difference of about two hours. Don't schedule too much on your arrival day.

Layover in Urumqi: Stable, but adds half a day.#
Flights from Yining to Urumqi take about 1.5 hours, then a connection to Kashgar takes about 2 hour. Including layover time, the total journey typically ranges from 6 to 8 hours. Benefits include frequent departures and easy changes or cancellations, making it ideal for travelers with flexible schedules.
- For connecting flights, try booking with the same airline or within the same alliance for seamless baggage transfer.
- Allow at least 2 hours for the layover; Urumqi Airport is large.
- During heavy winter snowfall, transfer options are often easier to rebook.

How to choose between the two connection methods#
One option is to fly directly from Ili to Kashgar after finishing the Ili tour, placing Southern Xinjiang in the second half for a more manageable pace. The other is to fly to Kashgar first and return to Ili later, ideal for ending your trip during the flower or snow season. Don't forget these two things#
How to book flights more reliably#
Direct flights are limited; consider booking your hotel stays first, then securing this leg. When transiting through Urumqi, try to keep both segments with the same airline for checked baggage through to your final destination and easier rebooking if you miss a flight. Book at least three weeks in advance during peak season for better prices and seat availability.
The illusion created by time zone differences#
Kashgar is about two hours behind Urumqi; in summer, it remains light until 10 PM local time. Schedule meals and sightseeing according to local time to avoid arriving when attractions are closed. Avoid long drives on your first day after landing.
Baggage and Document Verification#
Pack your ID, border pass, and flight itinerary in one bag the night before departure. Check fruit dried goods and dairy products purchased in Ili. Carry a jacket on board; there is a significant temperature difference between the two flight segments.
Should I stay overnight between the two flights?#
A layover under two hours risks missing your connecting flight if the first leg is delayed; over eight hours wastes half a day. The ideal compromise: arrive in Urumqi in the morning and depart for Kashgar in the afternoon, allowing 4–5 hours for a meal and transfer.
If the connection is too tight, spending a night in Urumqi is worth it. The airport offers easy access to the city center, and you'll be refreshed for an early morning flight to Southern Xinjiang the next day. Treat this overnight stay as part of your itinerary—it's far more reliable than betting on on-time arrivals.
Who is this connector suitable for?#
Travelers combining Ili and Southern Xinjiang should fly direct. Those with tight schedules visiting only one region don't need this option. For families with elderly or young children, a connecting flight offers more stability; although it adds half a day, it provides greater flexibility for changes and cancellations.
If you're traveling with lots of luggage, tripods, or camera gear, choose a direct flight to minimize baggage handling. For the Southern Xinjiang section, a border pass is required; obtain it in advance in Yining so you can proceed immediately upon arrival.
This connection plan often determines whether the entire route spans 8 or 10 days. Finalize it first, then schedule the itineraries at both ends to maintain a logical order.
Some areas in Southern Xinjiang require a Border Pass; obtain it before departure. If starting from Yining, get the pass beforehand—obtaining it upon landing in Kashgar will cost you an extra day. Dairy products and dried fruits brought from Ili should be checked rather than carried on for safety.
