Avoid driving between the three cities; use trains and flights instead.#
Traveling the Kashgar–Hotan–Kucha triangle in southern Xinjiang over ten days isn't about a loop—it's about splitting the trip. Distances between cities often range from 500 to 700 km: Kashgar to Hotan is about 500 km, taking 6 to 7 hours by car; Hotan to Kucha skirts the Taklamakan Desert and requires more than 10 hours on the road. Using trains and planes for long legs saves two days compared to driving the entire route and avoids backtracking.
Suggest entering via Kashgar and exiting from Kuqa; purchase a multi-city flight. Over the 10 days, only two segments are long-distance travel; the rest of your time will be spent in cities and scenic areas. All three airports and train stations are close to city centers—taxis typically take 20 to 30 minutes, so you won't need to wake up too early for transfers.
Kashgar 3-Day Tour: Choose Between Ancient City or Pamir Plateau#
Kashgar Old CitySpend one day at the Fragrant Concubine Garden and surrounding villages, with half a day for nearby rural areas; reserve the remaining day for Pamir or rest. Round-trip to Pamir takes 12 hours. If you have average stamina, take it slow through the Old Town and bazaars. The Old Town's opening ceremony happens in the morning—arrive early if you want to see it. It's less crowded around 8:00 AM.
Obtain a border pass in advance to visit Tashkurgan and carry your ID card. For accommodation in the ancient city, choose a homestay located down an alley; vehicles cannot enter, so be prepared to drag your luggage a distance. When booking, confirm the floor level and whether there is an elevator. If there isn't one, consider staying at a hotel outside the city. Alleys are dimly lit at night, so walk slowly.
The train from Kashgar to Hotan is smoother than driving.#
The distance from Kashgar to Hotan is approximately 500 km, taking 6 to 7 hours by car. The route consists entirely of highways and national roads with monotonous scenery. Trains departing in the evening and arriving in the morning or daytime high-speed rail services are more convenient; check schedules via official railway announcements. Book sleeper berths in advance. It takes about 20 minutes by taxi from Hotan Station to the city center.
Stay in central Hotan. Head to the night market in the evening for local favorites like grilled eggs and yogurt zongzi; stalls stay open late, with food available past 10 PM. Drink less on the road due to large gaps between service areas, and pack some snacks. Train tickets are scarce during peak season—book a few days ahead. The daytime high-speed rail takes about 4 hours, saving two to three hours compared to driving. Arrive in Hotan by afternoon to catch the night market.
Half-Day He River and King Walnut Tour in Hotan#
Hotan's highlights are the night market and Yurungkash River. Picking up jade along the river is an experience—don't expect to find anything valuable. Bring tools and sun protection, and avoid deep water. The King Walnut Park and the 1,000-Mile Grape Corridor are best for a half-day visit at a leisurely pace. Rest in the afternoon before embarking on a long-distance transfer the next day.
Buy jade based on your needs; always verify the appraisal certificate. Night markets are crowded: wear your bag in front and hold your child's hand. If you prefer quiet, stay at a hotel two streets away from the night market. The gravel beds along the Yurkash River become scorching at noon; pick up jade before 9 AM or after 7 PM, and bring water to rinse your hands.
Detours from Hotan to Kuqa by air or rail#
Although the straight-line distance between Hotan and Kuqa is short, the road route takes a detour.Taklamakan DesertDriving for more than 10 hours is not recommended. Common routes involve flying via Urumqi or taking a train via Kashgar and Aksu. Allow at least three hours for layovers to ensure reliability, and check luggage through to your final destination whenever possible.
Stay near the Old City in Kuqa for easy access to explore the next day. The airport is close to downtown (under 30 minutes by taxi), but flight options are limited. If your connections are tight, skip checked luggage and pack only essentials for one night. Trains from Hotan to Kuqa usually run overnight; sleeper tickets are harder to secure than flights. Include a buffer day in your itinerary.
Kucha in two days: explore the Old City and the Canyon separately.#
Spend half a day to a full day exploring Hestan Street, the Kuqa Old City Palace, and Qiciu Alley. The Tianshan Mystical Grand Canyon is about 1.5 hours north of the city; expect a 3-hour round-trip hike. It gets very hot around noon, and the shuttle bus requires an additional fee. The Kizil Caves are located toward Baicheng, about 2 hours away by car. Guided tours must be booked in advance, and photography inside the caves is prohibited.
No supplies in the canyon; bring enough water before entering. Do not enter during rainy weather. Morning light is ideal for the old town alleys; afternoon shots will be backlit. Two days are sufficient—skip distant attractions.
Return flight from Kuqa to Urumqi, with half a day of flexibility.#
Kuqa has an airport; flying to Urumqi and transferring there saves time. By train, take the overnight service from Kuqa to Urumqi and arrive after a night's sleep. Reserve half a day on Day 10 for flexibility in case of flight delays. Accommodation is arranged as follows: three nights in Kashgar, two nights in Hotan, and three nights in Kuqa, with the middle two nights spent on board or near the airport.
South Xinjiang 10-Day Small Group TourConnect these transport legs carefully and check bus schedules if traveling by ground. From Kucha to Urumqi, afternoon flights are plentiful while early ones are scarce; verify departure and arrival times when booking. Keep a warm jacket in your luggage for use on the Pamir Highway or overnight buses. Before departure, store your border permit, ID, and ticket details in a single document bag. If your flight on Day 10 is in the afternoon, you can still visit the old town of Kucha in the morning to catch the bustling early market before 9 AM.
