1. Why Plan a 9-Day Trip to Northern Xinjiang in Autumn
The window for autumn colors in Northern Xinjiang is short. From mid-9 to early 10, birch and larch change their look every week. We monitored the weather for two weeks before departure and scheduled our trip for late 9. The itinerary lasts 9 days in total. After subtracting the two days for round-trip travel from Urumqi, we have about 7 days for actual photography on the road.
Why not compress this into 7 days? Because the roads in Northern Xinjiang are too long. It takes a full day to drive from Urumqi to Burqin, approximately 8 to 9 hours. If we only allocate two days for the round trip, there won't be enough time for Kanas and Hemu. You'd have to leave immediately after capturing the sunrise, rendering the trip pointless.
II. 9-Day Itinerary and Daily Overnight Stops
Day 1: Arrive in Urumqi and rest in the city. Day 2: Depart early for Burqin; overnight in the county town. Day 3: Enter Kanas; stay in a wooden cabin within the scenic area. Day 4: Capture the morning mist, then head to Hemu for another night. Day 5: Watch sunrise at Hemu; return to Burqin in the afternoon. Day 6: Head toward Wuerhe; stay near Karamay to visit the魔鬼城 (City of Devils). Day 7: Travel south; overnight in Kuqin or Dushanzi. Day 8: Drive the northern section of the Duku Highway to enjoy autumn colors; stay near Nalati. Day 9: Return to Urumqi. Daily driving time is typically between 4 and 6 hours.
We arrived in Kanas on the afternoon of day 3, settled in first, scouted locations, and tested equipment by the water at dusk. On day 4, we caught the morning mist before heading to Hemu—a drive of about 2 hours. By day 5, we waited on the Hemu viewpoint until 1:00 PM before descending. This schedule ensures two shooting opportunities per location, so you won't go home empty-handed even if it's cloudy.
III. Lighting Time: Arrival time at the location
Sunrise in northern Xinjiang around the 9th is approximately at 7:20, and sunset occurs near 20. We typically arrive at our shooting spot 40 minutes before sunrise, which means getting set up around 6:40 to mount the tripod, test settings, and wait for the dawn light. Morning fog is most likely within the first half-hour after sunrise; afterward, the water surface often becomes flat and uninteresting.
Please note that getting from the transfer center to the aircraft stand involves a shuttle ride and walking, so check the first bus time in advance. Once, we thought arriving by 6 would be enough, but waiting for the shuttle took 20 minutes, and it was already fully daylight when we reached the water's edge. Arrive early in the evening. Be on site 1 hours before sunset to capture the village and tree line in warm light, then wait for the 10–15 minutes of cool-toned light after the sun dips behind the mountains. In Xinjiang, it gets dark late; even past 9 o'clock, daylight often lingers, and many realize too late that they've missed the best light.
IV. How to Choose Key Camera Angles
Moon Bay and Horse Bay viewing platforms offer aerial perspectives, but spots get crowded during peak times. For the sunrise platform in Hemu, timing depends on cloud cover; if clouds are thick, wait a bit longer for sunlight to break through. The Devil City is best visited in the late afternoon with side lighting; visiting during midday can result in washed-out colors.
My advice: don't try to do too much. In 9 days, we dedicated two mornings each to Kanas and Hemu. The photos we captured were better than if we'd rushed through the itinerary. For gear, check ahead of time.Photography Gear Checklist。
5. Equipment and Preparation
- Equipped with both wide-angle and telephoto lenses. Use the wide-angle for landscapes and the telephoto to capture village details.
- Essential tripod for sunrise, sunset, and long exposures. Hang a bag from it to stabilize in windy conditions.
- Bring spare batteries and memory cards daily. Batteries drain quickly in low temperatures; recharge them after warming up overnight.
- Polarizers and graduated neutral density filters help control sky brightness; they're also useful for managing water reflections.
VI. Frequently Asked Questions
When is the best time to see autumn colors in Northern Xinjiang?
Most years, it's from mid-to-late 9 to early 10, with about a week's variation each year. Check local conditions closer to your departure for the most accurate timing.
Is there fog every day?
Not necessarily. Fog is more likely when there's a large temperature difference between day and night, clear skies at night, and suitable humidity during the day. Staying for two consecutive nights increases your chances of encountering it.
Do I need to bring a drone?
Some scenic areas restrict drone use; check local regulations before takeoff and avoid flying over crowds.
Trip Summary
After 9 days, my biggest takeaway is to leave room for the weather. If I go again, I'll stay an extra night in Hemu just to wait for a clear day.
