Yining City has two walkable districts: Liuxing Street and Kazanqi. The former features a hexagonal radial layout with shops and garden courtyards clustered together; the latter is known for its blue walls and historic alleyways. Located close to each other, both can be explored in half a day.
1. What's the difference between the two blocks?#
Six Star Street has a casual, everyday vibe. Many courtyards along the road are open to the street, revealing gardens and wooden tables and chairs inside. Handmade shops, cafes, and bakeries are intermingled here, so you can easily find a spot to sit down after a short walk. In contrast, the older alleys of Kazanchi are denser, with walls painted in shades of blue and light colors. The alleys are narrow, and stepping into them often leads you into residential homes.
Kazanchi covers a larger area and is easy to get lost in or wander off course; stick to the main alleys for convenience. The Liuxing Street district is neatly laid out, so walking a loop brings you right back to where you started.
II. How to schedule a half-day#
I'll visit Kazanqi first, then Six Star Street. Arrive at Kazanqi by 10:30 AM when the sunlight slants into the alley, making the colorful walls look their best. Grab lunch near the main alley, then head to Six Star Street after 3 PM to shop, grab a drink, and relax before heading out.
- Morning in Kazanqi: alleys are well-lit and less crowded.
- Lunch nearby: easy to find banmian, pilaf, and kebabs.
- 6 p.m. at Six Star Street: Many shops, perfect for lingering and relaxing.
- Return to Main Street in the evening: convenient ride-hailing, avoid rush-hour traffic.

Photo Session Time
Midday overhead light in old alleys is harsh and casts shadows on faces. Move deeper into the alley to use the walls for bounce lighting. Arrive early to capture empty alley shots. When photographing residential areas, be respectful: don't enter private yards without permission; always ask first.
3. What to watch out for when shopping and eating#
Hand-knitted scarves, dried fruits, and dairy products are common. Scarves of the same style can vary by dozens of yuan across different shops. Visit first without buying, then return to purchase.Thin-skinned steamed bunsandMixed noodlesIt's a local favorite. If you're not used to strong flavors, let us know in advance if you'd like it less spicy or with less oil.
- When buying dried fruits by weight, clarify whether the price is for net weight or gross weight (including packaging).
- Handmade Textiles: Confirm if it's handmade and whether it's washable.
- Carry your backpack on the front when it's crowded.

4. Local Transportation and Duration of Stay#
Rides in the city center are affordable, with a 10–15 minute drive between blocks. Walking from Liuxing Street to Kazanqi takes about 30 minutes along the main street, making it convenient for some shopping. Half a day is tight; allocate a full day for a more relaxed pace, or return to your hotel midway for a break.

V. Convenient Stops Along the Route to Ili River Valley#
After exploring two neighborhoods, if you still have half a day left, take a stroll along the Ili River. At dusk, the river opens up with tree-lined shores on the opposite bank. It's cooler than during the day and popular with locals. Parking near the embankment can be tricky; taking a ride is more convenient.
The city center features several markets and food streets that come alive at night, perfect for grabbing dinner on your way back to your accommodation. Restaurants in Yining tend to serve savory dishes with a slightly salty flavor; feel free to request less spicy or less oily options when ordering, as most establishments are happy to accommodate.
How to choose an accommodation area
Hotels near Main Street are within a 20-minute drive to Six Star Street and Kazanqi. Staying on the edge of the Old City means you step out into alleyways in the morning, but parking is tight. For trips with luggage, choose a hotel with an elevator and easy street-side parking for a smoother experience.
If going tomorrowSayram LakeDepart around 8 a.m., allowing for a two-hour drive to reach the lakeside by noon, just in time to avoid the peak heat.
The courtyards on Six-Star Street are a defining feature of the neighborhood. Many are filled with grapevines and flowers, with tables and chairs set under the shade. Before entering, check if the space is open to the public; private residential yards should not be entered without permission. Several bakeries and cafes on the street get busy in the afternoon—if you want a quiet spot, arrive earlier. The walls in the old alleys are light-colored; wear solid colors for cleaner photos, as floral patterns can clash with the background.
